There's a Point in here somewhere, trust me...

7 am is brutal. I'm not sure what it is about that specific time, but I don't like it. Oh wait, I just figured it out:

When you wake up at 6 am you know you're getting up early, so your brain is prepared for grogginess. When you wake up at 8 am you've had a full night's sleep (most likely) so your brain is at its earliest point of full wakefulness. But at 7 am? Your brain is confused. It's early enough (and still dark out, for now) that your brain wants you to stay in bed. But it's late enough that you know the day is starting, and so you feel like maybe you should get up. It's guilt, grogginess, and a severe want for your bed. That's what it is!

So this morning as my daugher was getting ready for school, I was trying to devise ways for her to get ready and get to school all on her own. So I can stay in bed. What??

I decided that what she needs is a little lesson in fashion. Some people are born with a natural fashion sense. My niece had usurped her right to choose for herself by the age of 2! My daughter does not have this fashion-sense trait. Her only criteria for clothing is that it has to be clothing, and the tag can't itch. She and her dad come up with the same mismatched outfits, so neither of them have "picking out" privileges. I need to put together a short list of fashion MUSTS, that my almost-7 yr old can comprehend and implement. Here's what I have so far:

* Pick out your bottoms first, because you have less of those. Find a shirt next, based on your choice of bottoms.

* Jeans go with nearly EVERY top you have. Only choose a blue top as your last choice, but even still, blue would go with jeans.

* If it hurts to wear it, it's too little. If your tummy is hanging out, it's too little. If it's too little, do NOT put it back in your drawer. Throw it in the DI pile. (YES I still support the church. Sue me.)

* Socks matter least. If you can't find the right color, just grab any color. (ok, you see how fashionable her mama really is!)

Now here's what I'm wondering. Is there a way (chart, game, etc) to teach her which colors DO NOT go together? I mean, orange and blue are fine if you're a Bears fan, but for a 7 yr old girl??? Yikes...

Orange and blue are exact opposites, so should go well together like black/white, purple/yellow, red/green. I have no fashion sense, and if my family EVER submits me for that show What Not to Wear, I will kill them.

Well, I scarcely wear black with white, and I wouldn't ever wear purple with yellow or red with green (barring festive holiday wear). Not separates, anyway. I mean, if those colors are on a shirt, it might be cute.

For some reason fashion doesn't follow the typical color schemes. Don't know why...

And really, who am I to talk? I am only slightly interested / knowledgable about fashion! :)

If you were gay, you'd have your card revoked for the bullet point on socks. :) These are the rules:

Sneakers: white socks.
Black shoes: black (or blue) socks.
Brown shoes: brown socks.

I remember Geranimals as a kid - the color coded animals. *sigh* Those were the days. Of course, it took me until age six or so to tie my own shoes. Making it a game of each string as a bunny ear now seems kind of creepy.

I'm SO gay. More than YOU!!! Smelly lotions, remember?!?

And what are Geranimals? The name rings familiar, but I wasn't ever exposed to that joy.

Geranimals were the clothes I always wished I could wear! They are like the OSH KOSH for little kids. All were cute, and they had tags so you could buy mix and match stuff that went together. I was so not rich enough to wear lots of Geranimals. Sigh.

Lotions aren't "fashion," per se. :)

Gay card revocation still stands!

Thou shalt not mix up the sock rules!

Superfluous point: whether lotions are fashion or not.

How's that mango stuff by the way? I'm certain you tossed it, because you acted very guilty when questioned, nay drilled (!) over it's whereabouts. 'Fess up...

Here is what I do. I tend to buy out fits that coordinate and mix match with each other...any clothes that are not coordinating I place on the higher clothes rack and they are already prematched ready to be worn!! If you stay within the same line or brand of clothes this coordination works well! We tell the kids to pick out the clothes the nite before and lay them across their bedroom chair. This way I get a sneak preview and my groggy, lack of coffee self isn't surprised! I had three kids in four years...this habit became a lifesaver...theirs!!! Do I get a gay card now?!? :)

GREAT, HIGHLY productive advice, Joom. As an honorary gay member, I hereby reward you your gay card.

Don't let the likes of Sideon fool you into thinking that he can revoke your card on any mismatched sock whim.

My four year old has an eye for color, so this makes me laugh because it's so darn cute...

One way to get rid of the old stuff is to not put it in the closet or the drawer when you have washed it. Hint keep a box or bag in the laundryroom to stuff full of those old things tat seem to get into the wash anyways. As for the clothes, getting tops that are colorful or rainbow colors can go with any bottom she may have. If the color of the bottom is in the top, wear it. You could always mark letters in the clothes that match. If the letters match, they can be worn together. Does she wear the next thing in the drawer or closet, or soes she fish for her favorites?

Garanimals were clothes that were color coorinated so they matched tops and bottoms, as well. Like I said about colors before, they had colorful top to match several bottoms. We had an outlet in Fishkill when the boys were little and I used to get them at outlet prices. Of course after growing out of them they lost all sense of fashin, they didn't have in the first place. You know plaids and stripes can go together IF, and that is a big 'if', the have co-oridinating colors. Oh! That is for home fashion, not clothes, I guess. Oh well, some guys have, most guys don't.

The mango lotion is quite lovely looking as long as it stays in the container. I didn't throw it out - I just don't know where I put it at the moment. Hard to remember where anything is based on the house being torn apart and things in boxes and boxes stored in the shed or garage. In regards to fashion, the lotion comment wasn't superfluous - it was apropos :)

Gay card revocation still stands.

**insert gavel sound, here**

Hehehehe :)

Joom,

What is an out fit?

Sounds like a fit had after someone is outed. Perhaps you do qualify for that Gay Card, socks or not.

Any color goes with any color for clothing, as long as they're solids, just stay away from prints, and stripes. It's the accessories that matter.

And there is absolutley NOTHING wrong with orange and blue. My jacket has orange and blue. My Jean Paul Gaultier pants are orange and blue. Sarah Jessica Parker wears orange and blue frequently, and I can't believe I just used her as an example of fashion, I am allergic to this woman.

Hell, even my cat is orange and he looks fabulous in blue!

Still waiting for my comment today from you, and you know every comment you leave is witty or smart.

I think Eric should just stop wearing clothes altogether, which would solve the problem. :-O

Or better yet, just put him on a naked time out until he can get some fashion sense. LOL !!

hahaha, these comments are cracking me up, what an entry this is! I especially loved it when Ross said: "I think Eric should just stop wearing clothes altogether, which would solve the problem. :-O". Hear Hear!

I have not yet allowed my girls to dress themselves yet, and it's because I'm afraid of the outcome. I need to get over that.

I love reading your thoughts, La!

Okay, here are the rules for letting L dress herself:

1) What the &$*% do you care what she wears if it means you get to sleep in?

2) If she dresses herself in something too small, she has to deal with it all day. You can throw it in the DI pile that night when she changes.

3) If she wears a pink polka dotted tutu with an orange plaid vest, what the ^&*$ do you care if it means you get to sleep in?

4) If she gets made fun of for her taste in clothes, tell her to WEAR IT LIKE SHE MEANS IT. Confidence is the key. She can be a trendsetter. And what the &$^% do you care? YOU GET TO SLEEP IN.
